About Christian Ishak

Clinical rigor. Spiritual depth. Questions that reach beyond the self.

My work grows from an enduring question: How can psychology help people move not only away from suffering, but toward actualization, spiritual depth, and self-transcendence?

My academic and clinical formation

Christian Ishak

I earned my master’s degree in Psychological Science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where I researched the effects of mystical experiences on mental health under Dr. Ralph W. Hood Jr. One of the world’s leading researchers in the psychology of mystical experience, Dr. Hood developed the widely used Mysticism Scale and has spent decades advancing the scientific study of religion, spirituality, and mysticism.

I am now completing doctoral training in clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University under Dr. Annette Mahoney, a pioneering scholar in the psychology of religion and spirituality. Her work on relational spirituality examines how religious and spiritual beliefs, practices, and experiences can shape individual well-being and close relationships—for better and for worse.

Clinical psychology doctoral training requires sustained engagement with psychological science, assessment, case conceptualization, ethics, and evidence-based approaches to intervention under supervision. My aim is not to stand outside that rigor, but to bring it into conversation with domains that psychology has sometimes treated as peripheral: spirituality, ultimate meaning, mystical experience, and transcendence.

My orientation

My orientation begins with a spiritual conviction: the separate self is not the deepest truth of who we are. Beneath the identities we defend and the stories we tell about ourselves is a more fundamental unity with divine existence—with God, being, life, and the whole of which we are expressions rather than isolated parts.

Different traditions gesture toward this mystery in different ways: tat tvam asi; life as lila; Christ within; the kingdom of Heaven among us. I do not treat these traditions as interchangeable, and I do not require others to adopt my metaphysics. I do take seriously their shared challenge to the fantasy that we are self-contained egos standing apart from the sacred.

Nonduality, mysticism, and the transpersonal

Much of psychological work understandably focuses on modifying the individual self: changing thoughts, regulating emotions, strengthening coping, or developing a healthier personality. Those aims can be valuable. My central interests—nonduality, spirituality, mystical experience, and the transpersonal—ask what becomes possible when the self is no longer treated as the endpoint.

I want to help people loosen their tight grip on life without withdrawing from it: to hold thoughts, roles, ambitions, and fears more lightly; to value their existence more than what they accomplish; and to participate more fully in love, service, beauty, relationship, creation, and play.

What differentiates my work

I want to hold disciplined psychological thinking and genuine spiritual depth together. Science can help us understand mind, behavior, development, suffering, and change. Spiritual traditions ask what a human being ultimately is and how we might awaken to a life that is not organized entirely around self-protection.

The guiding movement is from pathology toward functioning, from functioning toward self-actualization, and from actualization toward self-transcendence.

Current professional status

I am a clinical psychology doctoral student, not an independently licensed psychologist. My clinical training occurs within supervised doctoral settings. Current Actualization& coaching, speaking, and consultation services are educational and developmental—not psychotherapy, psychological assessment, diagnosis, or treatment.

After completing the necessary training and licensure requirements, I hope to offer psychologically, spiritually, existentially, and transpersonally integrated clinical services. Those interested in future services may join the separate future therapy interest list.
